About Eric Carle
Eric Carle (1929–2021) was a celebrated American author and illustrator, best known for his distinctive, colorful children’s books. Born in Syracuse, New York, and raised in Germany, Carle’s early experiences abroad influenced his artistic style. He studied at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Stuttgart and later returned to the U.S. to pursue a career in art and illustration.
Carle’s most famous work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has become a timeless classic, translated into dozens of languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. Over his career, he authored and illustrated more than 70 books, each marked by his unique collage technique. In 2002, he co-founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art to promote and celebrate children’s literature and illustration.
