About Mary Higgins Clark

Mary Higgins Clark was an acclaimed American author known for her suspense novels. She wrote 51 best-selling books, with her debut work, “Where Are the Children?”, reaching its seventy-fifth printing. Each of her novels enjoyed remarkable success, both in the United States and across Europe, and remained in print as of 2015.

Born on Christmas Eve in 1927 in the Bronx, New York, Mary Higgins Clark displayed a passion for writing from a young age, penning her first poem at seven. She embarked on her writing career after a stint as a stewardess for Pan-American Airlines and later worked as a secretary and copy editor. Her early short stories helped supplement her family’s income.

Tragedy struck in 1964 when her husband passed away, leaving her a widow with five children. This difficult period led her to try her hand at writing novels, eventually finding her niche in mystery and suspense fiction. Her novel “Where Are the Children?” marked a turning point in her career, selling for a substantial sum and becoming a bestseller. This success set the stage for a prolific career.

Throughout her life, Higgins Clark’s works garnered widespread recognition and numerous awards. Her contributions to literature were celebrated with accolades such as the Edgar Award and the Horatio Alger Award. She was a prominent figure in the Mystery Writers of America and served as the Chairman of the International Crime Congress.

Beyond her writing achievements, Mary Higgins Clark was involved in philanthropic endeavors and received various honors for her heritage and literary contributions. She passed away in Naples, Florida, in 2020, leaving behind a lasting legacy as the “Queen of Suspense.”
