About Jo Nesbo

Jo Nesbø, whose full name is Jon “Jo” Nesbø, is a prominent Norwegian writer, musician, and former football player and reporter. Born on March 29, 1960, in Oslo, he spent his early years in Molde. Nesbø holds a degree in economics and business administration from the Norwegian School of Economics. Before embarking on his writing career, he worked as a freelance journalist and stockbroker.

Nesbø is celebrated for his crime novels, notably those featuring Inspector Harry Hole. These novels delve into the intricate investigations of Hole, a detective with Crime Squad and later the National Criminal Investigation Service. Hole’s cases often lead him beyond Norway’s borders, where he confronts serial killers, bank robbers, gangsters, and corrupt establishments. But Hole grapples a significant amount of times with his personal demons and alcoholism.

The Harry Hole series is renowned for its multi-layered plots, violence, and the frequent peril faced by female characters, as exemplified in “The Snowman.” Nesbø’s writing reinvigorated the crime fiction genre, earning him global acclaim.

In addition to his crime novels, Nesbø is the lead vocalist and songwriter for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre. He has also ventured into children’s literature with books like “Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder.”

Nesbø’s literary prowess extends beyond fiction. He reimagined Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in a ‘crime noir’ version and has authored stand-alone works such as “The Son” and “The Kingdom.”

Furthermore, Nesbø’s athletic background includes playing as a striker for Molde FK before a knee injury cut short his football career. In 2023, he achieved a significant milestone in his rock climbing hobby, climbing a challenging French grade 8a sport route.

With more than 50 million copies of his novels sold worldwide by 2021, Jo Nesbø has become Norway’s most successful author. His literary contributions and diverse talents continue to captivate audiences both in Norway and around the world.
